Kazan Startup Weekend: talks on high-tech business development by means of joint projects with Innopolis University

IT Park held a meeting with participation of the faculty of the Institute of Information Systems of Innopolis University and IT companies of the Republic of Tatarstan.

This weekend key Russian investors, company representatives and experts in various industries gathered on the platform of Kazan IT Park to take part in one of the major Russian startup events. A number of investment agreements with the total value over RUB 71 million (USD 1,026,013) were concluded in just two days. The event was marked by the meeting between the faculty of Innopolis University and representatives of the local high-tech industry, companies and entities introducing IT solutions to enhance their production capacity.

The event was launched by Roman Shaykhutdinov, Deputy Prime-Minister, Minister of Information and Communication of the Republic of Tatarstan, who greeted organizers and participants of the event with the welcome speech: “I wish the team of Innopolis University to make a successful self-presentation and the industrial companies to learn more about activities and opportunities of this university”. The Minister assured that this session would lay the foundation for similar events in future and then gave the floor to the first speaker.

Giancarlo Succi, Head of the Institute of Information Systems at Innopolis University, one of the leading international experts in empirical methods of software engineering analysis had the honour to open the event: “Focus on cooperation with industrial companies was one of the key employment conditions for each faculty member of Innopolis University. We all have a significant work experience in this sector. For this reason, we want out competencies in the fields that we are going to introduce here today to be useful for your companies”.

After his report, Prof. Succi turned the floor over to his colleague, Joseph Brown, Head of the Artificial Intelligence in Game Development Lab at Innopolis University: “In our lab we do not conduct general research in games. Instead, the lab is focused on games that deal with educational problems and arrange different processes. This competence can help companies to modify their conventional work pattern”. Dr. Brown told that the lab research activity is devoted to the Game Theory in the following areas: Machine Learning, Human Behavior Analysis and Process Automation, and called the audience to collaborate with the first domestic IT university.

The meeting was also featured by Alexander Tormasov, Rector of Innopols University, one of the globally leading scientists working in the field of software and hardware virtualization, who told the audience about the scope of activities carried out in the Cloud Systems and Virtualization Lab at Innopolis University. “Our lab works on the creation of a novel cloud platform that can be used to organize services and data storage. By the latter we mean petabyte-scale storage repositories”, - told the Head of the University. The researcher marked that the platform is designed to create systems able to store exabytes of valuable data”

Other faculty members of Innopolis University also presented their reports. Thus, Adil Khan, Head of the Machine Learning and Data Representation Lab spoke about the application of computer vision and machine learning in business related to the social sphere: healthcare, surveillance, smart cities and machines. Ramil Kuleev, Research Engineer, shared with the audience the details of a joint work on the X-Ray images analysis carried out by the Medical Images Analysis Lab and the “Vektor” Radio Company based in Chistopol. Since 2014, the lab has been developing a complex of sci-tech solutions for the system for automated recognition of various lung pathologies based on X-Ray images. In addition, Qiang Qu, Head of the Big Data and Information Systems Lab, made a report on data analysis for smart cities and financial institutions.

At the end of the meeting, Rector of Innopolis University thanked the audience for joining the event and mentioned that Innopolis University is open for cooperation with industrial companies. The Rector also expressed confidence that such events will be held regularly in future.

According to the meeting results, several large-scale companies showed their interest in collaboration with Innopolis University. The latter will keep strengthening cooperation ties with industry providing world-class expertise for high-tech IT projects.
